about us

About Us:

Live Free is a multimedia enterprise that oversees the distribution of film, web series, and music. Our goal is to make content that infuses originality and the highest grade, most recent tech.

Specs:

Our favorite cameras are the Canon Rebel T6i and the Panasonic Lumix G7. The Canon is used primarily for wide shots that don’t need any cropping during editing, while the 4K specs of the Lumix enhance all of our other scenes.

Taglines:

– The crew that’s always DTF (Down To Film)

Origin Story:

Live Free’s seeds were planted in 2013 when Mike Barkhoff and Conner Paulsen made a short film for their seventh grade technology class. The short film, Timeline, was written by Barkhoff years prior and was described as “Back To The Future” meets “Ben Affleck’s The Town”.

In 2014, Barkhoff continued short film efforts and also divulged into a handful of web series. During this timeframe, combined with Paulsen’s moving away for some time, Barkhoff began to collaborate almost extensively with Jarrod Van Hauen.

In 2016, the duo – longtime best friends beforehand – made the production banner Barking Vans, under which numerous short films and web series were released. Barkhoff’s first feature film was also release under this banner. In the spring of 2018, Barkhoff decided to add skillsets to his resume using the banner and began signing musicians who he helped distribute music for.

In 2019, Barkhoff and Van Hauen decided to make Barking Vans a production banner and create a distribution platform. This was so Van Hauen’s name was distanced from projects and artists he had no connection to, as he was hesitant on working with musicians but allowed Barkhoff consent to try the idea. Barkhoff’s idea for the name was inspired by the Mac Miller song of the same name, and he had the idea to make a distribution platform that allowed artists almost complete creative control (only stepping in for small business matters or to clear up content that may be overly divisive).

Celebrate With Us:

Every July 15th, Live Free celebrates Sobriety Day, a day formed by Barkhoff to celebrate all of his friends – a majority of which being artists, some of which part of the collective – becoming sober.

CreateMore:

Our main marketing team is titled CreateMore, which also serves as a launching point for anyone with an idea for art, and a decided beginning narrative with their idea – be it a script, a video game’s first seedling of code, etc. Expierenced individuals from the profession are afforded the ability to find new protégés and collaborates through CreateMore. You share your idea and, through our members circle, we’ll try to get you noticed.

Bonus Track Edition:

On his birthday in 2019, Barkhoff released the “Bonus Track Edition” which, ironically, cut all of the artist’s songs from the film and replaced them with original scores done by himself. This was to make one version of the film worry-free of future copyright strikes in case any of the musicians unknowingly caused one on the film when submitting their music to streaming services. It is also the version of the film featured on the Blu Ray.
